Periodontology

Periodontology is a part of dentistry dealing with changes of the teeth supporting structure.

As the mouth often mirrors the general body condition, periodontal status can tell us more then just how the patient's gums are.

Gingivitis is often caused by bad oral hygine, accumulation of plaque and tartar and by inadequately adjusted prosthetic work. The disease is often heredital and also comes with systemic illnesses like leucemia, diabetes, and AIDS.

Left untreated, gingivitis will progress to parodontitis and within a longer period, passing through different stages, lead to loose teeth.

The symptoms of periodontal disease:

  1. Bad breath
  2. Swallen gingiva that bleeds whilst washing
  3. Pain whilst bitting
  4. Lenghtening of the teeth (tooth looks longer)
  5. Loose teeth that have to be extracted.

The desease, if recognised in time, can succesfully be kept under control by combining different periodontal treatments as well as adding an adequate antibiotic therapy.

Before starting any prothetic work, we control the periodontal status in a standard procesure and intervene if needed, in order to make the future work last longer and look better.
